Much, many, little, few, a lot, plenty - Parte 2

Much não é muito utilizado em frases afirmativas, embora seja gramaticalmente correto, pois 'não soa natural'. Nestes casos utiliza-se a lot of ou lots of:

We spent a lot of money. (ao invés de We spent much money)


Já quando a sentença for negativa, much pode ser utilizado sem problemas:

We didn't spend much money.


Much é utilizado em perguntas. Observe este diálogo:

Jim: Do you see Jane much? (Você se encontra muito com a Jane?) Jack: Yes, I see her a lot. (e não I see her much).


Já com substantivos contáveis a história é diferente. Podemos utilizar many ou a lot of em qualquer tipo de sentença, afirmativas, negativas e perguntas:

Many people drive too fast. (ou A lot of people drive too fast)
Do you know many people? (ou Do you know a lot of people?)
There aren't many tourists here today. (ou There aren't a lot of tourists here today).


Mas para days, weeks e years utilizamos sempre many e nunca a lot of:

We've lived here for many years. (e não We've lived here for a lot of years)
It took me many weeks to paint the house. (e não It took me a lot of weeks...)



Existe uma pequena diferença entre a little e little. Assim como entre a few e few. Com 'a' a frase possuirá um significado mais positivo, ou otimista. Já sem a letra 'a', terá uma idéia mais negativa. Compare:

Peter is very busy with his job. He has little time for other things. (pouco tempo, menos do que ele gostaria).

Let's go and have a coffee. We have a little time before the bus leaves. (um pouco de tempo, suficiente para tomar um café antes de pegar o ônibus).

Vicky doesn't like living in Seattle. She has few friends there. (menos amigos do que ela gostaria).

I enjoy my life here. I have a few friends and we meet quite often. (poucos amigos, mas suficiente para fazer compania)

a little/a few = um pouco, alguns(as)

Compare:
Douglas speaks little english. (= It is difficult to talk to him.)
Amanda speaks a little english. (= It is not so difficult to talk to her)
